Not Today...I ain't dinner.5/10/2014 Imitation of Christ: Book 1, Chapter 13 Of Resisting Temptations
Many seek to flee temptations, and fall worse into them. We cannot conquer by flight alone, but by patience and true humility we become stronger than all our enemies. Predators have a system of making sure survival is of utmost importance, and food is one of the greatest elements of surviving. They couldn't eat as often as needed if they attacked the strongest of their prey, so they normal attack the young or the weakest. I am no longer young nor will I remain weak. In this fight or flight mental game with sin I will choose the former to keep me alive. By doing so I need to acknowledge two major things: 1) a predator exist and 2) death (in terms of sin) is a real consequence if ones weak and unaware. Many of us make the mistake of running from temptation and not meeting it head on on the battleground for our soul (sounds epically extreme, but let's call a spade a spade; that's what's going down). Now don't mistake what I am saying as an excuse to open the loins cage and slap it because, that would just be plan stupid. I'm saying acknowledge the lion, hear its prrrr and choice to not die today. 1 Peter 5:8 "Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." The key words hear are: ROARING and LOOKING. The evil one makes a lot of noise to make itself seem more powerful than it really is, and as any predator it is looking for the weak to devour. But you aren't weak are you? Of course not, because weakness is a choice, like fear is a learned behavior. A predator exist and death is a consequence of ignorance and/or timidity!
